Pedestrian and Traffic Safety in Atwater Park

The Atwater Park Civic Association (APCA) recently convened a crucial meeting attended by a diverse group of stakeholders, including Baystate Medical Center representatives, the Springfield Department of Public Works (DPW)/Engineering Departments, neighborhood residents, and elected officials. The primary focus of this gathering was to address pressing concerns related to traffic and pedestrian safety within our community.

Background

In recent years, the Atwater Park neighborhood has witnessed significant changes in traffic patterns due to the completion of the 'Hospital of the Future' at Baystate Medical Center. While these developments have brought many positive changes to our area, they have also raised concerns regarding the safety of pedestrians and drivers alike.

Key Discussion Points

During the meeting, the following key discussion points were addressed:

  • Traffic Signals at Armory and Springfield Streets: One of the central topics of discussion was the potential installation of traffic signals at the intersection of Armory and Springfield Streets. The goal is to enhance safety and improve traffic flow at this crucial junction.
  • Raised Crosswalk and Signals at the Daley Entrance: Another critical issue on the agenda was the proposal to install a raised crosswalk and pedestrian signals at the Daley Entrance to Baystate Medical Center. This initiative aims to provide safer access to the Medical Center for both patients and staff, and ensure safe travel to the bus stops that are located at this location.

Commitment to Neighborhood Safety

The Atwater Park Civic Association, in collaboration with its members and partner organizations, remains deeply committed to addressing these safety concerns head-on. The meeting served as a crucial platform for fostering open dialogue and exploring potential solutions.

Next Steps

As part of our ongoing commitment to neighborhood safety, representatives of the APCA leadership will be meeting with Springfield traffic engineers in October. This meeting will focus on developing a more refined plan of action to address the specific traffic and pedestrian safety issues identified. Following this meeting, the APCA leadership will provide Atwater Park residents with a comprehensive update on the proposed next steps and any further developments.
